A Natural History of Chimneys

A Natural History of Chimneys is an audio and visual artwork that examines the chimney as a shared space for two species: humans and a small bird called the Chimney Swift. Sited at various Twin Cities’ locations, participants will experience the Swifts descending into their chimney to roost at sunset. Through the imagery of chimneys, birds, and chimney sweeps, this work presents a nonlinear history of two species whose lives have developed in tandem. These overlapping narratives highlight the inevitability of change that time enacts on a species and our role in shaping that change.
